Create a Psychologically Healthy Workplace
Show Notes

Today Clint is joined by Dr. Parker, and they discuss how to create a  psychologically healthy workplace. Sometimes you create culture, sometimes you influence and change culture, but identifying the unhealthy aspects of company culture is the first step to any change. In today's episode, we lay our five research-based improvements that can help to create a healthy workplace.

  1. Create a psychologically and physically safe environment. In general, most employees are afraid of their bosses. The best thing you can do as a leader is learning to be a great listener.
  2. Create team member involvement. People are more likely to get behind an idea that they helped create.
  3. Encourage work-life balance. Create an experience for your team where they're not burned out and overworked
  4. Invest in team member growth and development. Top performers want to feel like they're growing and developing to become the best in their field.
  5. Develop a consistent method of appreciation. Recognize that if your team is unappreciated, they are very likely to leave their job. People lose a lot of motivation when they don't feel like they’re being seen for their contribution in the workplace. If you receive more criticism than praise, then you’re out of balance.

To brainstorm applications from today's episode, grab your journal and write out an answer to each of these questions:

  • How do you provide more growth opportunities?
  • What systems could you use to get more ideas and input from your team?
  • How could you regularly recognize and appreciate people?
  • What evidence do you have that you model a healthy work-life balance in your own life, and how do you reward employees that do this?
  • How could you improve your physical or psychological safety in your workplace?
