Show Notes

Welcome to Season 3 of the Next Peak Podcast, where we help you to redefine what success looks like for you, and share strategies, tools, and stories that will help you climb your next peak.

Today we are going to be talking about the wisdom of the trail; what mountain biking has taught us about life and work. Dr. Parker Houston and BCIP Mountain Bike Instructor Kelly Payne explore the metaphor of the trail as life. In Today’s episode, we're going to be applying a lot of principles from performance psychology that will help you with personal and family leadership, in addition to career and business pursuits.

The  fundamentals of mountain biking focus on 3 things:

  1. Stability
  2. Balance
  3. Control

Three principles for mountain biking and life:

  1. Focus on fundamentals in order to develop a strong foundation.
    • Mastering the fundamentals drastically increases your stability, balance, and control.
    • If you have a good foundation you can build on it, if you have a weak foundation you won’t progress.
  2. Keep your vision up, constantly scan and look out for what is coming up.
    • Don’t get distracted when you get exhausted.
    • If you know what is up ahead, you know how to prepare
  3. Be present, maintain connection with where you are.
    • Balance long term vision and investments in the present
    • Don’t lose connection with what is right in front of you
